Bias Incidents and Hate Speech Oversight Committee

  • Overview of the Bias Incidents and Hate Speech Oversight Committee

In June 2020, the Tigard-Tualatin School District Board of Directors passed a Resolution condemning racism and committing to being an anti-racist school district. During the implementation of this resolution, a Bias Incidents and Hate Speech policy was created prohibiting hate speech and directing the necessary Solutions and Healing actions. A policy creating a permanent oversight committee was also created to monitor the development and implementation of the District’s Education, Accountability, Solutions, and Healing (EASH) Plans. The Bias Incidents and Hate Speech Oversight Committee shall have at least seven community members appointed by the Board. The District is initially looking for candidates to fill vacancies for 1 and 2-year terms. Committee members may reapply to serve additional terms.

The Committee is designed to include individuals representing teachers, parents/caregivers, administrators, and students and representing all three building levels: elementary, middle, and high school, and no fewer than half of the Committee shall be individuals who identify as members of historically marginalized and underserved communities.

The Committee serves in an advisory role and does not have decision making authority, but will review EASH Plans developed by each school and make recommendations to the Board to improve district anti-racist policies and their implementation. The Committee will meet at least four times each school year.

Application due by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Friday, March 5, 2021. (EXTENDED DUE DATE)
